I'm just like you. I've always been able to write songs in my head, but I have never known how to translate it onto paper or an instrument. I am now finally learning piano, at the age of 20. And it is hard, but not insurmountable.

I've heard that it's easier to do when you are younger and haven't already developed naturally bad habits that can hinder your playing. However, this can be overcome. You just have to practice. Every day. Preferably for at least an hour. Even if you get bored. Just keep going. Repetition develops the muscle memory that will become your best friend.

Also, I recommend getting a teacher. He/she will be able to give you pointers and will also keep you on track by helping you set goals for yourself.
References :
My own experience and the things I've learned

Get a good teacher and or a good series of self-teaching books. You might also try Piano for Dummies. It's not that hard if you have the patience to get past the beginners stuff because it can really bog you down when you first start. But with diligence and practice you'll do fine!

Good luck!
References :
depends upon the individual's aptitude for piano playing. no way to tell until you try it. i waited to learn until age 17, and i sucked at it, gave up, learned the pointer system as a cheat. and now i play fake book music from time to time. but i think if i had started at age 7 instead of 17, i could have made a go of it.
